They are a world leader in mining and resource production, specializing in iron ore, coal, base metals and specialty metals, and petroleum. Role Purpose: China continues to be a key growth market for the steel industry, and related raw materials, and is a core driver of the company’s business success. The analytical role is to provide industry and market intelligence, resulting in effective delivery of critical insights to support the company’s sales and marketing activities and growth opportunities in the iron ore, metallurgical coal, and manganese businesses. Key Dimensions: Support the further development of the company’s knowledge of the Chinese steel industry, and understanding the major trends that affect it. Provide rigorous analytical support to the company’s marketing and business development need with respect to the Chinese steel industry. Work as a member of the company’s integrated analytical team in Shanghai, the China Analysis Team (CAT). Create positive internal and external networks which enhance the capacity of the role to deliver best practice outcomes. Key Relationships: Vice President, Business Analysis China The China Analysis Team (CAT) CSM Analytical Community and Marketing Team in China The company’s Marketing and Business Development networks and Corporate functions Chinese steelmakers and industry experts Chinese Government authorities, think tanks, industry associations and data providers Analytical contractors and consultants Core Accountabilities: Provide support to, and take initiative in, CAT market research projects. Collect and process data; build and maintain analytical models to a high level of integrity and transparency. Maintain supply/demand, price and competitor analysis databases, customer profiles and forecasting models/tools, working seamlessly with CAT analysts. Conduct market research or customer visits as required Team-based activity with CAT and other functions within the company. Producing and communicating insights, data, and market intelligence, through timely verbal communication, well-written reports, studies and presentations to internal customers. Role Competencies: Self motivated Customer service and highly team orientated Able to manage detail, but also capable of synthesizing multiple sources of information and identifying implications for the company. Can home in on key messages and recommendations of importance to key decision makers Ability to identify linkages between market developments and CSG strategy and business development initiatives Reliable, honest, trustworthy, patient and responsible. Integrity and values compatible with the company charter. Ability to correctly handle confidential business material Strong organizational and process skills Positive personal style conducive to establishing business links and influencing internal customers. Must be a team player actively supportive of CAT goals, focused on analytical best practice. Specific Skills and Competencies: Financial and business analysis Knowledge of statistical modeling Superior communication and presentation skills (e.g. able to deliver PowerPoint presentations to executive management teams on topics relevant to job function). Ability to present complex data in a readily digestible form Bilingual communication skills (strong written and spoken English and Mandarin). Familiarity with working and communication style of a reputable international organization Strong Excel and related data management /modeling skills Good listening skills Willingness to learn, and to share knowledge readily with colleagues Requirements: A quality first degree, preferably in a relevant discipline (e.g. economics, engineering, science or technology) Solid quantitative skills Strong fluency in English and Mandarin essential (spoken and written) Ability to work in a small team requiring significant personal initiative Hands-on familiarity with PC-based software e.g. MS Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint, including Access Ability to commit to a Shanghai based position Preferable: MBA or post-graduate qualification in business, economics or finance Relevant industry knowledge or background and advantage (minimum of 3-4 years industry experience in a relevant organization Demonstrated ability in industry analysis derivation of insights from complex data Sound commercial awareness Solid overall knowledge of and demonstrable networks within the resources and/or energy sector in China “Team player” able to share and contribute across other industry sectors.
